Excerpt from Cooler Than Ice: Arctic Records and the Rise of Philly Soul:
The Tiffanys had the honor of inaugurating Arctic with their hard-charging “Happiest Girl In The World,” There wasn’t one lead vocalist; they delivered their danceable ode to a guy who’s “lookin’ like brand new money” in three-part harmony.
Always on the lookout for young talent, Dynodynamics Productions discovered the Tiffanys in the North Philly projects and kept the trio busy in the studio as one of their favorite female backing groups. The group was a trio consisting of Brenda Williams, Lillian “Peaches” Wilson and Marian Bowser. The Tiffanys sang behind Barbara Mason on “Trouble Child,” Mason’s debut single for the Crusader logo, backgrounded Nella Dodds (another Dynodynamics discovery) on some of her Wand sides, and had a handful of their own releases.
“I remember commenting to Weldon and the guys that it was their stab at doing a Motownesque kind of record,” says guitarist Bobby Eli, who played on the session. A moody ballad, “Love Me,” was positioned on the B-side; again the trio sticks together vocally while the pianist gets adventurous on some of the turnarounds. Johnny Stiles was in on its composition, along with Brenda and Marian.
The session was held at Baker Sound in Camden, New Jersey. “It was on top of the Oasis Motel, of all places. It was one of those hooker motels,” says Bobby Eli. “Baker Sound had a studio up on the top floor. And that one was recorded there. I think Nella Dodds’ ‘Come See About Me’ may have been done there also, around the same time.”
