The great Georgia-born singer and songwriter, Titus Turner, came to Jamie Records in 1961 for an update, which took the form of dance single “Pony Time” as The Conductor and an album with a full orchestral backing arranged and conducted by the noted songwriter Mort Garson. Jamie Recourds had just tried the same with Savannah Churchill, with similar uncommercial but enduring sultry results.
Excerpt from Sound Off (Jamie LP 3018) liner notes:
Titus Turner --- First sounded off in his crib – May 1st, 1933.
In his Peach State of Atlanta, GA, some people have been known as “being born with a silver spoon in their mouth.” But, Titus Turner sounded off in early years with a golden tone in his throat! Titus, inherited his big sound from his singing parents, the elder Joseph Turner and Mrs. Essie Turner, who was the lead singer in their church choir.
In his early teens, Titus was recognized for his soul-stirring singing and his songwriting ability.
In this album Titus Turner Sounds Off, with twelve carefully selected standards. Sung in his own inimitable way, the mood of “DAY IN AND DAY OUT” makes you aware of new excitement in this great old song. Then go with him while he swings you in a completely different groove with his dynamic “GLORY OF LOVE.” And what a job he does with old standard “Blue Moon."
With his youth, vigor and diction, we cannot find words to express one’s jubilant feeling as he gives out with expressive thunder, lightning and yet, sensitivity.
It has been said by many critics that the best way to describe Mr. Titus Turner is “Mr. Tremendous.”
