The Soul Brothers Six’s Funky Funky Way of Making Love was more than a year in the making when previously unknown 16-track session tapes were discovered in Sigma Sound Studio vaults. Those tapes included not only "Funky Funky Way of Making Love" and its original pairing with "Let Me Be The One" on Phil-LA of Soul Records, but also three other fantastic songs cut with noted soul producer Morris Bailey Jr including "If It’s Alright It’s Gonna Be All Night" and "Where You Gonna Find Another Foo.l" John Ellison heard the new mixes and the songs themselves for the first time in 30 years with tears in his eyes at the Jamie offices in Philadelphia as the recording was being prepared for release.
The Soul Brothers Six shot to prominence in 1967 with the release of their first single, "(She’s) Some Kind of Wonderful." The song took on a life of its own with versions by Grand Funk Railroad, Huey Lewis & The News, Buddy Guy, Conway Twitty and a gospel version by Mark Farner.
In the early 1970s, The Soul Brothers Six moved heavily into funk with five releases on Phil-LA of Soul Records and many more cuts left in unreleased. These are the basis of the Funky Funky Way of Making Love CD that catches the group in an exuberant mood punctuated with soulful ballads performed in the distinctive voice of writer and producer John Ellison. Ellison has continued to perform and record for 30 years. His interests have diversified with his creation and licensing of a meat, fish and chicken spice he invented called "Some Kind of Wonderful" that is also coming out with prepared foods under the “Some Kind of Wonderful” name.
