Pal Rakes is best known as a country singer. He was born in Tampa as Palmer Crawford Rakes III and had a country album in the 1970s on Atlantic Records. He put out R&B on Phil-LA of Soul in as Pal and the Prophets with “Lotta Good Lovin'” b/w “I Keep Foolin' Myself” (Phil-LA of Soul 326) in February 1969 and  the rock instrumental, “The Whip,” b/w “Peace Pipe”  (Phil-LA of Soul 332) in July 1969. In between he also had a country record on Jamie Records as Pal Crawford, which, like the Phil-LA of Soul recording, he produced with Lenny Pakula in 1969. The country record with a pop tinge was “The Bed” b/w “Show a Little Appreciation” (Jamie 1376). And for his soul/R&B bona fides, check out "We Gotta Good Thing Goin', a version of Barbara Lynn's Southern soul classic, "Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Goin'").
